First day as a intern at Bhutan Cancer Society

DAY 1

AUGUST 2

Typical, it is 8 am Tuesday morning I am running late. Knowing it will take approximately 10 minutes to reach out highway and have to wait for city bus. I grab my notepad, bag and hastily lock my room door. Thimphu

It was very first time I got into city bus. Was nervous and in the same time I came to know that there were lots of people using city bus services in thimphu. I got on bus sadly couldn't get seat. Tracing while standing. It really was scary and I couldn't get balance either. After traveling for around may be 20 minutes it's the place name Lhadrong (bus stop), Hejo. My mentor WAS REALLY a supportive and friendly. She guide me to ride on city bus and the way towards Bhutan Cancer Society. Was a peaceful place, although the place is far from the town.

Found out that organization is located far away from town but it's peaceful place to work, free from noise pollution. And the work place is innovative and values continuous learning, and my goal is to work in a forward-thinking.

I was introduced to organizations staff. Learnt that the organization has only four staffs and all of them were female. I couldn't met with Executive director and the accountant of BCS since they were out of station for screening camp in Wangdue. For the first day me and two volunteers joined together and discussed on the upcoming exhibition program that's going to held in Paro in September month.

Personally I liked the idea and the way Bhutan cancer society does was very inspiring everyone of us. I observed that my mentor is being very busy in her work. She give calls to patients and ask how they are doing. And also patients called to thank her being helpful. Was really a lovely profession she had was what I thought whole day.

Yes, I am struggling. I haven't been to Hejo and most of the parts in Thimphu. There was fear in me that says I would get lost and I would commit a mistake. I was not able to be cooperative and confident enough to talk and share with my friends but it may get better when time passes by and may be I didn't have my fellow intern so that's what I thought of. Actually I am a noisy girl when I was in college.

I believe Bhutan Cancer Society and this internship can help me to achieve all my expectations.

Wish me a luck 🤞

Article review ✨

The study on the situation of violence against women in Bhutan by NCWC provides insightful information on the state of women's safety in the country. However we could find different viewpoints on the study's findings. On the negative side, the study reveals alarming rates of intimate partner violence and sexual violence against women in Bhutan. For instance, out of the 1,000 women surveyed, nearly 63% reported experiencing at least one form of physical or sexual violence by their partners. Such findings suggest that the government and relevant stakeholders need to take urgent action to address the issue. Failure to do so perpetuates a culture of violence against women and makes it difficult for women to speak out against the abuse.  On the positive side, the study sheds light on the extent of violence against women and provides a much-needed platform for advocacy. The National Commission for Women and Children (NCWC) has taken proactive measures to address the issue, such as ...
